The Special Events are organized and run by our member volunteers. They determine the game format and theme. The event organizers also create fun goody bags, themed game cards, course signs and instructions.
Many of the game formats for special events requires the determination of the “best net ball” per hole. The net ball is the total hole score minus the POP’s.
For simplicity purposes, the club uses the 1st of the month Front 9-hole handicap for the front and back for sweeps. The Handicap Chair can provide the report if needed.
The GHIN app will give you a 9-hole handicap but it’s at the date and time you look it up. There is no function in the app to specify a date.
Each team card must be “Popped” for each player. This is a two-step process:
Most Popular Special Event Game Formats
Pink, Green, Orange Ball
4-Person team. The colored ball rotates in scorecard order to each player. The team score is determined by the player with the colored ball. One player will have the colored ball for 3 holes.
Partner Low Net
2-Person team. Team score is the one best net ball on each hole. Each player plays their own ball from tee to green.
Cha Cha Cha or 1,2, 3
4-Person team. On the first hole, team scores one low net ball. On the second hole, team scores two low net balls. On the third hole, team scores three low net balls. Repeat the pattern for the rest of the round.
Scramble
4-person team. Each player in the foursome hits a shot and then proceeds to the location of the best shot. Each player then hits from the selected spot. A minimum number of tee shots are required for each player. Lowest team score wins. Not postable.
Good, Bad & the Ugly
4-Person team. Score three best net balls on all Par 3’s; two best net balls on all Par 4’s and 1 “worst” net ball (the ugly) on all Par 5’s. Lowest score wins.
Three Blind Mice
Each player will record their score like normal. At the end of the round, three holes will be drawn at random. Everyone’s scores for these three holes are thrown out. Scores are adjusted and the lowest team score wins.
Ship, Captain, Crew
4-Person team. The first six holes, one best net ball; the second six holes, two best net balls; the third six holes, three best net balls. Lowest team score wins.
Mystery Team
2-person teams score 1 best net ball on each hole. When the round is over, your team is randomly paired with another two person team, and your team scores are added together for a 4-person, 2 Best Net Ball score.
4 Person, 2 Best Net Balls
4-person team scores 2 best net balls per hole. Each player plays their ball from tee to green.
Devil 6-6-6
On a 9-Hole course, game would be Devil 3-3-3. This is a 2 or 4-player game. 3 holes are played as a scramble, 3 holes as 1 best score, and 3 holes of alternate shot. Only 1 score recorded for each hole. Final score for awards can be either the final gross score or the net score using the average handicaps of the team players.
Chips Ahoy
Each player receives a different color poker chip before teeing off. After holing out on each hole, pick the valentine heart from the green side envelope. Score for the team is the matching poker chip to heart color. For teams of three, there will be a blind draw.
Luck of the Draw
Use regular scoring on all cards. At the end of play, take cards and $1 to event table. Each golfer will draw one number that corresponds to the lucky hole. The gross score on the lucky hole gets deducted from the total net score.
How to Plan and Organize a Special Event
Pick a theme and game format. Many game formats are featured on this page.
Create a description of the game and event for the Captain’s Weekly Message to members.
If the game format requires “popped” scorecards, request a copy of the handicap report from the Handicap Chair. Either pop the cards or make the pop chart available to members so they can pop their own scorecards.
Use all of your budget, $40. Submit receipts for reimbursement to the Treasurer. An emailed reimbursement request with pictures of receipts is welcomed.
On the day of the event, arrive early to set up the welcome table.
The sweeps money collected on that day is used for money awards. All birdies ($3) and chip-ins ($2) must be paid out first. The remaining amount is the prize fund.
Please try to award as many players as possible. See How to Calculate Sweeps Winners Video on the Sweeps Page.
Make envelopes for each winner to be announced and handed out at the upcoming luncheon. Mark with winner’s name, date, event and place.
How to Flight a Tournament
Please award as many participants as possible. First to Third place in each flight would be ideal for an individual event.
Individual Event
- Sort players into flights. If there are less than 3 players in a flight, combine with an adjacent flight.
- Determine the winners for each flight.
- From the total cash received for the day, deduct birdies and chips ins. The balance remaining is the prize fund. The purse for each flight should be equal.
Team Event
For a team event, no flights are necessary. First through third or fourth would be ideal. Volunteers decide the purse for each level.
Flight Ranges
Course Handicap | Flight |
---|---|
1 – 14 | A |
15 – 17 | B |
18 – 20 | C |
21 – 23+ | D |
